On August 9, 2014, Michael (Mike) Brown, an 18 year-old unarmed black man, was shot dead by officer Darren Wilson of the Ferguson Police Department. Within moments of his death the citizens of Furgeson, Missouri, some eye witnesses, began to document the shooting. For the first time, we the people received the news before the mass media was able to manipulate the story. We witnessed the truth unfold in the events after the shooting through Live Stream, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter. We cried with Mike Brown’s mother as she lost a son she fought hard to keep in school and on the right track.
Our hearts went out to the citizens of Furgeson, as we watched years of frustration with a corrupt police department pour into the city streets. Their expressions of ‘freedom of assembly’ were met with tear gas and armed force. But we also observed a people that would not give into injustice.
Their undeniable passion for justice inspired the nation to stand and take action together. On August 14th 2014, over 90 cities joined Furgeson in a National Moment of Silence (#NMOS14). Pursuit of Nappiness gathered in the protest at Malcolm X Park in the nation’s capital, Washington DC. We documented the experience of Peace, Love, and Unity for you to watch below.

We must stand up for the life of Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin, Rekia Boyd, John Crawford, and countless others that have lost their lives due to racism. We must wake up and see how racism affects both black and white; young and old. Racism benefits no one. It is time to break the chains that hold all our minds in fear. Fear of getting shot while being Black. Or Fear of being killed by Black.
Keep the conversations going, continue to protest, educate, and love each other in these days to come. No one person can do everything but we all can do something.
