Pursuit of Nappiness: Should I stop using sulfates?
Vann Cosmetics: Sulfates have been used in the cosmetic industry for decades, without any issues. So, why are they getting a bad rep now?
I love what’s going on in the black hair market. Just about everyone is going natural or thinking about it! Don’t you love that women of all shades are embracing their curls and wearing them free of judgment? I know I do.
The curly nation is experiencing a learning curve. We are asking ourselves what we should or shouldn’t use on our hair? I want to shed light on the misconception that sulfates are bad for your hair.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the American Cancer Council (ACC), there is absolutely no scientific evidence that links SLS to cancer. However, SLS can cause irritation to the skin if it is used at extremely high concentrations of 90-100% in powder form. Though almost all formulas only use the ingredient at 30% in liquid form. So, don’t worry.
Since SLS is a detergent, meaning its job is to pick up dirt and oils from your hair and wash it away, if you use the ingredient too often, it could dry out your hair. Though, it is extremely necessary to properly cleanse your hair to get rid of any trapped dirt and oil. If you are noticing that your hair is looking dull and grey, you probably need to wash it more often. Sulfate-free shampoos are okay, but they don’t cleanse your hair as well as a shampoo that contains sulfates.
You don’t need to fear SLS, just use it in moderation!
Happy Cleaning!
